INTRODUCTORY RITES & GREETING

OPENING HYMN
The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended,
The darkness falls at thy behest;
To thee our morning hymns ascended,
Thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

We thank thee that thy church unsleeping,
While earth rolls onward into light,
Through all the world her watch is keeping,
And rests not now by day or night.

As o'er each continent and island
The dawn leads on another day,
The voice of prayer is never silent,
Nor dies the strain of praise away.

The sun that bids us rest is waking
Our brethren 'neath the western sky,
And hour by hour fresh lips are making
Thy wondrous doings heard on high.

So be it, Lord; thy throne shall never,
Like earth's proud empires, pass away;
Thy kingdom stands, and grows for ever,
Till all thy creatures own thy sway.

LITURGY OF THE WORD:

READING
From the Book of Wisdom

Read by Sophie Pemberton
The virtuous man, though he die before his time, will find rest. Length of days is not
what makes age honourable, nor number of years the true measure of life;
understanding, this is man’s grey hairs, untarnished life, this is ripe old age. He has
sought to please God, so God has loved him; as he was living among sinners, he has
been taken up. He has been carried off so that evil may not warp his understanding
or treachery seduce his soul; for the fascination of evil throws good things into the
shade, and the whirlwind of desire corrupts a simple heart. Coming to perfection in
so short a while, he achieved long life; his soul being pleasing to the Lord, he has
taken him quickly from the wickedness around him. Yet people look on,
uncomprehending; it does not enter their heads that grace and mercy await the
chosen of the Lord, and protection, his holy ones.
This is the word of the Lord.

PSALM 23
All sing
The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want.
He makes me down to lie
In pastures green, he leadeth me
The quiet waters by.

My soul he doth restore again;
And me to walk doth make
Within the paths of righteousness,
E’en for his own name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale,
Yet will I fear no ill:
For thou art with me; and thy rod
And staff me comfort still.

My table thou hast furnished
In presence of my foes;
My head thou dost with oil anoint,
And my cup overflows.

Goodness and mercy all my life
Shall surely follow me.
And in God’s house for evermore
My dwelling-place shall be.

READING
From the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans

Read by Donal O’Mahony
Avoid getting in to debt, except the debt of mutual love. If you love your fellow men
you have carried out your obligations. All the commandments: You shall not commit
adultery, you shall not kill, you shall not steal, you shall not covet, and so on, are
summed up in this single command: You must love your neighbour as yourself. Love
is the one thing that cannot hurt your neighbour; that is why it is the answer to
every one of the commandments.
This is the word of the Lord.

GOSPEL
A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Jesus said to his disciples: “Give to everyone who asks you, and do not ask for your
property back from the man who robs you. Treat others as you would like them to
treat you. If you love those who love you, what thanks can you expect? Even sinners
love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what
thanks can you expect? For even sinners do that much. And if you lend to those from
whom you hope to receive, what thanks can you expect? Even sinners lend to
sinners to get back the same amount. Instead, love your enemies and do good, and
lend without any hope of return. You will have a great reward, and you will be sons
of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.

Be compassionate as your father is compassionate. Do not judge, and you will not be
judged yourselves; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned yourselves;
grant pardon, and you will be pardoned. Give, and there will be gifts for you: a full
measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be poured into your
lap; because the amount you measure out is the amount you will be given back”.
This is the Gospel of the Lord

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST:

OFFERTORY HYMN

O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works thy hand hath made:
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Then sings my soul my Saviour God to thee
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to thee
How great thou art! How great thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze;

But when I think that God his Son not sparing,
Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, our burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away our sin:

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
To take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then shall I bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, My God how great thou art.

READING
From a passage on Children from ‘The Prophet’

By Kahlil Gibran
Read by Rosalind Wyatt

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

PRAYER OF COMMENDATION

FINAL HYMN

Guide me, O my great redeemer,
pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but you are mighty,
hold me with your powerful hand:
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
feed me now and evermore.

Open now the crystal fountain,
where the healing waters flow;
let the fiery, cloudy pillar
lead me all my journey through;
Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
ever be my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan,
bid my anxious fears subside,
Death of death, and hell’s Destruction,
land me safe on Canaan’s side;
songs of praises, songs of praises,
I will ever sing to you.
